True Worshiping

“.. true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks” (John 4:23)

These are the words of Jesus to the Samaritan woman at the well. Not much ambiguity in His statement, is there? And we know that God knows our hearts. It is there that the truth is disclosed. It is there where the evidence resides as to whether we truly worship the Lord. As Jesus said in His sermon on the mount: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt 6:21). God knows if our “worship” of Him is true or is superficial. Our mindset on Sunday mornings is one indicator. As God accused the Jews through the prophet Amos: “you can’t wait for the Sabbath day to be over and the religious festivals to end so you can get back to…” (Amos 8:5). Is your attendance at Sunday worship services like that? Is it a “put on”, superficial, routine? Or it is it truly an act of worship, that resides in your heart and defines your life on Mondays through Saturdays as well? A song by Keith Green “My Eyes are Dry” says it well:
“My eyes are dry, my faith is old
My heart is hard, my prayers are cold
But I know how I ought to be
Alive to you and dead to me.
