One of the reasons why we run

     Even with rain and chilly temperatures, attendees came from all over Houston to collectively honor and remember our fallen heroes Saturday, March 20, at the second annual Houston Run for the Fallen. Some even came as far away as California, Connecticut and Virginia. Although the weather was dismal, spirits were high as participants made their way around the Woodlands-College Park High School track in whatever way they were able.
      A tribute to fallen service members and their families included the National Anthem, presenting of colors, retired Air Force officer and motivational speaker, Mike Matte and reading the names of each fallen hero that was represented by friends and family, a total of 54 in all. Immediately after the ceremony, the Run officially began.
     People of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels ran or walked while others pushed strollers and wheelchairs or pulled wagons carrying little children for whatever distance they chose. While a mile is the suggested length, participants are encouraged to choose a distance best suited for them.

Sharing stories along the way

     Participants and gold star family members shared stories and tears of their heroes as they made their trek. Charlie, who drove from Galveston to attend the event was glad she did. “As I walked the track, I talked with others around me. Hearing about these heroes was incredibly moving. It made the journey even more poignant. I’m already looking forward to next year’s event.”
     Around the track were picture memorials of the fallen to give participants an opportunity to honor and remember in a more personal way.

Remembering is not an option for many

     Steffani Erickson, co-founder of Houston Run for the Fallen believes many in our community want to find ways to show their support for our military. “Houston Run for the Fallen first and foremost honors fallen soldiers and their families and then active and veteran service members and the organizations that support them. Our purpose is simply to give the community an opportunity to honor and remember those who have served our country with their life.”
