Friends are something we all have. Some are close, and some are far away. A real friend though, is a valued commodity. What makes a true friend? Ask that question to people and you’ll get many different answers. A few may respond “someone who is there for you in the bad times.” Others will say, “A person who accepts you for who you are- daily.” Regardless, of what the reply, we all know a real friend is there for you and offers support when needed, whether they live miles away or next door.
That thought brings me to recall a scripture in John that tells us Jesus considers each one who will commit to him a friend.
John 15: 14-15 “Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.”
“Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”
When thinking about the usage of the word friend, then yes, Jesus certainly qualifies. He is always there for each one. All a person needs to do is call on him.
A personal relationship with the Lord is as close to us as our heart. If we accept him into our lives, then he’s there, waiting for a relationship.
Just like a friendship with another person a bond with Jesus requires some time to cultivate.
Jesus is your friend, share things with him just as any friend does. Yes, the Lord already knows what is going on in your life, but he wants all of us to feel a personal connection with him-one that makes each of us want to reach out in the good times as well as the bad.
Prayer, reading the bible and just talking to God is the way to draw close to his bosom. Having an intimate relationship with Jesus is a sure way to live a productive life. The bond that grows from trusting God makes for a positive outlook. Even when things get tough, if finances or health issues come about and threaten your happiness life just seems so much better with Jesus as a friend.
Let’s not forget, even though Jesus is our friend, we have an obligation to that friendship. After all, He’s our savior. He is the one who died on the cross for our sins. We own him much, and he asks little.
John 15:10 “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.”
