Who will be the new cast in season 2 of HBO's 'True Detective'?

'True Detective' has emerged as the breakout hit of 2014, largely fueled by the big marquee talents of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. And ever since it was announced that season two would feature an entirely new cast and setting rumors have been rampant; both Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain have gathered online buzz as possible leads on the new series.

While neither of their participation has been confirmed, there is now definitive news on the new season's focus; In a May 25 interview with public radio station 'To The Best of Our Knowledge', series creator Nic Pizzolatto explained that next year's storyline will feature three lead characters, and will take place in California; “we’re working with three leads. It takes place in California — not Los Angeles, but some of the much lesser known venues of California — and we’re going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place, much like we did in season one.”

He continued; “The characters are all new, but I’m deeply in love with each of them. We’ve got the entire series broken out with a couple of scripts, and we’ll probably start casting in earnest in the coming months.” And as far as his overarching concept of the show, he clarified; "The world itself is poison; there's something ruinous at work here. The poison at the root of the world is humanity."

As far as Chastain's possible involvement, the actress denied the rumors while walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival; “It’s an awkward thing because when all that attention takes away from whoever plays the role. I’m a big fan of the series. I’m going to watch the second season just like I watched every episode of the first.”

Pizzolatto took some heat for having a male-centric view on the first series of 'True Detective' and hinted that the next season would have more of a female focus. And there's one actress that's made it clear she wants on board; Emma Stone. She tossed her hat in the ring via an article with Vogue Magazine. Her idea for a co-star? Kristen Wiig; “That would be amazing. I would do True Detective with Kristen Wiig in a heartbeat.” The idea of two primarily comedic actresses drudging in the dark waters of HBO's drama is an unlikely but inspired choice.
