‘True Blood’s’ steamy gay sex scene may be a hint of more to come

HBO’s popular supernatural hit series “True Blood” managed to surprise its audience on Sunday night as the show opened with a steamy sex scene involving two major characters. The surprising part was the scene involved two men and two characters viewers may have never expected.

In the opening scene vampire Eric Northman played by Alexander Skarsgard and Jason Stackhouse played by Ryan Kwanten shared an intimate, erotic moment. Although the scene was just a dream, the raunchy encounter could be viewed as controversial because of the characters involved and not necessarily because it involved two men. The actors, who are both straight, revealed the scene as being a bit awkward.

Kwanten said in an interview with TV Line, “There was word on the street that a scene was coming. To be honest, Alex and I had been – not necessarily begging to work together – but we’d been pondering the thought, ‘What if we were ever put in a scene where it was just the two of us? What would happen?’ and this is what our illustrious writers came up with.”

What the writers came up with is a scene that more than likely won’t be forgotten anytime soon. In the scene both characters exchange words, undress each other and Kiss passionately as they climb into bed. As the two got intense in their lovemaking, Jason wakes up from the dream.

Kwanten said both actors just focused on staying true to their characters and having fun with the scene. And it wasn’t the first homoerotic dream the character of Jason has had. Last season, he had a dream that he was shaving vampire-faerie-villain Warlow (Ben Flynn). The character is straight on the show, but appears to be building some interest for the other team. With a show like “True Blood”, viewers never know in which direction a character will go. So far the final season is causing quite a stir.

Just last week, actor Luke Grimes reportedly left his role as James because he was uncomfortable playing a gay character. Grimes departed the show in December due to “creative differences.” He allegedly refused to do any gay sex scenes, but his publicist denied the rumors and stated his client left to pursue other opportunities. Apparently there may be some more steamy gay scenes yet to come, but between which characters?
