Trucker protests are coming to Washington. A group calling themselves "Truckers Ride for the Constitution" are rolling to the nation’s capitol Friday with plans to establish a three-day demonstration as they protest everything from fuel prices and regulations, to low wages, to the government shutdown and the debt ceiling, reports USA Today on Oct. 8.
The group’s Facebook site, with 61,000 “likes” as of the writing of this article, has the following message:
The American people are sick and tired of the corruption that is destroying America! We therefore declare a GENERAL STRIKE on the weekend of October 11-13, 2013! Truck drivers will not haul freight! Americans can strike in solidarity with truck drivers!
Over 3,000 truckers have voiced intent to join the rally. The group aims to create a severe slowdown of traffic by tying up all three lanes of Interstate 495 with slow moving rigs. Motorists who show support for the cause, by displaying a “T2SDA Truckers to Shut Down America" card, will be allowed to pass.
The group behind the rally said in a news release that the "stage is now set for what we now consider the last peaceful defensive stand in a war that has been declared by Wall Street, Washington, and the White House upon the American people."
Some of those organizing the ride have gone so far as to say that the truckers would set up blockades if police attempted to intervene, and that they would march on Congress and arrest legislators in session.
“We want these people arrested, and we're coming in with the grand jury to do it,” Georgia trucker Earl Conlon said. “We are going to ask the law enforcement to uphold their constitutional oath and make these arrests. If they refuse to do it, by the power of the people of the United States and the people's grand jury, they don't want to do it, we will. We the people will find a way.”
Conlan’s strong words prompted the site’s Facebook page to issue the following clarification:
“Folks, here's the entire scoop on US News & World Report attempting to get a sensational title from someone not authorized to speak on behalf of all peaceful protesters. As we approach the event, this is what we can expect from the MSM and potential saboteurs --- but NOTHING will stop us!”
UPDATE Oct. 9: Has the rally now been canceled?
