Troy Davis murdered Officer Mark MacPhail on August 19, 1989. In August of 1991 he was convicted of the murder and sentenced to death by a jury. It has been reported over and over by the news media, bloggers, celebrities and just about everyone opposing this execution that it was an all white jury. This is untrue and totally irresponsible journalism. The jury in the Troy Davis case was comprised of 7 blacks and 5 whites.
Officer MacPhail was shot in the heart and face with a .38 caliber handgun. A gun that Davis had been seen carrying earlier. MacPhail was 27 years old with a 2 year old son.
The people who are trying to stop the execution also try to portray that Davis was a nice guy. He pled guilty in 1988 of Carrying a Concealed Weapon. His nickname on the street was “RAH”, which stood for Rough as Hell.
On August 18, 1989 he was driving around with a friend and got involved in a traffic altercation with another vehicle. Davis shot the passenger of the other car, Michael Cooper, in the face. He was also convicted of that.
How many people have heard about the shorts retrieved from Davis home that had compelling forensic evidence on them? A judge ordered them inadmissible at trial because they were obtained without a search warrant. The jury could not hear that evidence and still found him guilty.
Davis confessed to a cellmate that he shot MacPhail because he feared he would connect him to the earlier Cooper shooting.
Quite simply people, it’s time for Troy Davis to pay the price for killing Mark MacPhail in cold blood.
