Troy Davis executed despite public outcry

Troy Davis was executed by lethal injection tonight, September 21, 2012 at 11:08 p.m. Davis was convicted of the 1989 killing of police officer Mark MacPhail. In his last words, Troy Davis maintained his innocence until the end.

In his last words, Troy Davis spoke to the MacPhail family while strapped to a gurney. Telling them, ”I did not personally kill your son, father, brother. I am innocent." Davis also spoke directly to prison officials "May God have mercy on your souls. May God bless your souls."

Davis’ execution has captured worldwide attention in recent days. Many celebrities tried in vain to save the life of Troy Davis.

Celebrities reached out to anyone who would listen on Twitter to raise awareness about Troy Davis.

Hip-hop artist Big Boi went to the prison in Jackson, Georgia where Troy Davis was to be executed. After the Supreme Court denied to stay Davis’ execution, Big Boi tweeted “Just remember we fought til the very end....peace and Blessings”

Russell Simmons, Sandra Bernhard, LL Cool J, Kim Kardashian and many other celebrities shared their support to raise awareness for Davis.
