Tuesday, tropical storm Colin was upgraded from a tropical depression with maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour; the storm approached the southeastern Caribbean Sea from the Atlantic, and is about 945 miles east of the Lesser Antilles moving west-northwest at 23 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Colin is expected to build in strength over the next 36 hours and move northeast of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, according to the Miami Hurricane Center. Colin is expected to move between the US and Bermuda by this weekend, and if it moves to the north it is expected to weaken over the cooler waters.
Tropical Storm Colin is the third tropical storm of the season, following Hurricane Alex that made landfall in northern Mexico about a month ago. The 2010 hurricane season began June 1 and will continue through November.
