The Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition show at the Fort Lauderdale Broward County Convention Center continues to be a must attend event for those in the plant business. Hot trends for new plant introductions include Alglaonemas (Chinese Evergreens) species . Aglanomeas are very popular in the plant rental and maintenance business due to their ability to thrive in indoor low light environments. Traditionally they are dark green leaves with white silver and light green markings. The new varieties have pink to red colors in the leaves as well. Costa Nursery introduced a double size brilliant yellow hibiscus.
Oglesby nursery, a wholesale nursery is a giant in the industry. Ray Oglesby pioneered the use of tissue culture to mass market plants that were previously limited in availability such as Antheriums and Spathiphyllum (Peace Lillies). Ray also created superstar plants for the mass market and supplied many wholesale nurseries the small plants known in the trade as liners and plugs to grow out and sell. Popular iconic plants such as Antherium Lady Jane, once an industry stable, has been replaced with a new generation of deeply green bushy plants with a multitude of showy large flowers in rich red, pink and whitehues.
Vertical walls are gaining in popularity. Vertical walls are contraptions to hold plants at an angle and may be as small as two feet tall and four feet wide resting on top of a small wall. The walls may be utilized to shield a receptionist from office staff or to act as a barrier between a restaurant hostess and the patrons eating at tables. There are larger walls floor to ceiling or even some on cruise ship atriums and parking garages. One of the companies supplying the industry with the equipment is Architectural Supplements out of Waterburg, CT.
