The flick, directed and produced by José Padilha, is a sequel of the 2007 film "The Elite Squad" ("Tropa de Elite"). It continues the semi-fictional account of the BOPE, the Special Police Operations Battalion of the Rio de Janeiro Military Police, with a focus on the relationship between law enforcement and politics.
The film was released in Brazil in 2010 and achieved public and critical acclaim, becoming the all-time largest box office in the country. It was also selected as the Brazilian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards, but it did not make the final shortlist.
