An off-duty NYPD officer was killed early Thursday when his car reportedly lost control on a Long Island parkway and overturning several times after striking another vehicle, State Police said in a news release.
Police said the crash occurred Oct. 17 just before 1 a.m. along the Southern State Parkway near Exit 31, a junction for the Bethpage Parkway.
According to investigators, Joseph Capo, 27, of West Islip, was driving a 2004 Volkswagen east along the Southern State Parkway when he lost control of his car and struck a 2001 Cadillac. The Volkswagen then overturned several times, police said.
Capo, a police officer assigned to the Ninth Precinct in Manhattan, was taken to Nassau University Medical Center, but died a short time later.
Police said the driver of the Cadillac, 54-year-old Laurine Noble, of Deer Park, was treated for minor injuries.
State Police are continuing to investigate the crash. Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to call state police investigators at 631-756-3300.
