An Oceanside man was charged Thursday with a slew of criminal charges after he allegedly stole an SUV in Nassau County and then led state troopers on a pursuit before crashing the stolen vehicle and taking off on foot, New York State Police said March 14.
Ivan Torres, 34, was awaiting arraignment Friday at First District Court in Central Islip on unlawful fleeing, reckless endangerment, drug and stolen property charges.
Police allege he stole a 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer from an unspecified location in Nassau County on Thursday. He was driving on the Southern State Parkway later in the day, when a state trooper tried to pull him over, but Torres allegedly failed to stop and led police on a short pursuit.
Cops said he crashed the stolen car while driving the wrong way down Route 231 in Deer Park, causing minor property damage, before allegedly taking off on foot. A Suffolk County police canine unit found him nearby.
Suffolk County police also charged Torres with a grand larceny for allegedly stealing jewelry from a store in Sayville, authorities said.
