Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue star is rising

His name is Troy Andrews, but he goes by the stage name of Trombone Shorty. He is the high energy, charismatic trombone and trumpet playing/vocalist who leads a group of very talented musicians known as Orleans Avenue. Trombone Shorty turned 28 in January and he is a rising star on the music scene. He has worked in jazz, funk and rap music. He is a New Orleans native and has appeared on the HBO show Treme several times. That show is about New Orleans and a lot of the filming is done there.

If you have not seen this gentleman in concert, you are truly missing one of the great show performers. I saw him and the group at the Playboy Jazz Festival the other year and the crowd loved them. Trombone Shorty blows so hard on the horn that it seems like he is going to pass out. He not only plays and sings but dances and even beats on the drums. The band includes Micheal 'Bass' Ballard on bass guitar, Pete Murano on guitar, Dan Oestreicher on baritone sax, Joey Peebles on drums and Tim McFatter on tenor sax. They really play so well together and know how to put on a good show.

Trombone Shorty gives back to the community as well. His Trombone Shorty Foundation is in partnership with Tulane University and the Trombone Shorty Music Academy which mentors intercity youth in music performance and music business. That is a great gesture on his part and is something that is definitely needed in New Orleans and cities around the United States. The group's most recent album was released last fall and is titled Say That to Say This. The album was co-produced by Raphael Saadiq who played some of the instruments, wrote three of the songs and backed up on vocals.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue will be on tour for the next few months. They will be in southern California on April 13th and 20th, at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio. They also have a date in San Diego on August 22, 2014 and the Thornton Winery in Temecula on August 23, 2014. As the saying goes, catch them if you can.
