The first round of the 2010 Dona Ana Classic may have lacked the Las Cruces trademark winds of springtime, but grabbing a 22 stroke lead seemed to be a “breeze” for the Deming Wildcats lady golfers.
Co-host Mayfield High School struggled to keep pace on their home golf course, but is by no means entirely out of contention with the leadership they possess from seasoned competitors such as Emily Schwalm and Jordan Sprague. In fact, Schwalm enters round two tied for second place after shooting an 88, just three strokes back of the leader Bianca Dominguez from Deming. Jordan Sprague also looks to improve upon her round of 98 which puts her in a tie for tenth place when play resumes in the two-day tournament tomorrow at New Mexico State University Golf Course. Mayfield will attempt to catch an extremely talented squad of young ladies from Deming who boast a deep team, but one that could possibly be equaled or surpassed by the consistency of a Trojan team which saw all four of its scoring golfers finish round one inside the top fifteen of all individual scorers. This includes Brittany Alvarez with a 99 (T-13th place) and Shelby Whitlock with a 100 (T-15th place).
The final round of this first competitive tournament of the Spring Season for local lady golfers will finish tomorrow at New Mexico State University Golf Course where the weather report calls for more sun, and warmer temperatures, which should lead to even more pars and maybe some birdies too.
