Trivial Revelations of San Antonio: Deep Throat, George Jefferson, and Hogan

“Deep Throat,” the Watergate whistleblower source for reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein that eventually led to the downfall of President Richard Nixon, once upon a time lived in San Antonio.

William Mark Felt, Sr. worked in San Antonio for the local FBI Field Office prior to becoming Associate Director of that organization.

After more than 30 years of secrecy, Felt revealed himself on May 31, 2005. The story ultimately became even more well-known in the movie “All The President’s Men.”

Sherman Hemsley, of television classics The Jeffersons and All In the Family, will be celebrating his 74th birthday on February 1, 2012. Hemsley is starring in “Ain’t Misbehavin’ at the Josephine Theater, 339 W. Josephine (210-734-4646), through February 11.

Hemsley has been to San Antonio several times including basic training at Lackland Air Force Base and making an appearance at the grand opening ceremony at a Thousand Oaks and Henderson Pass cleaners in the 1980s.

Could the Josephine be San Antonio’s next Fiesta Dinner Playhouse?

Earl Hollimann (Police Woman, Forbidden Planet, The Twilight Zone, The Rainmaker, Sons of Katie Elder) owned the Fiesta Playhouse from 1980 to 1987 and brought actors such as Van Johnson, Martin Milner, Martha Raye, James MacArthur, Lee Meriwether, Patty Duke, Roddy McDowall, Phyllis Diller, Julie Sommars, and Don Ameche, which closed in 1987.

Hollimann signed TV Hogan’s Heroes star Bob Crane to appear at his 1604, near 281, theater in the play “Beginner’s Luck.”

On June 28, 1978, Crane was about to leave Scottsdale, Arizona bound for San Antonio when he was beat to death (some say it was with a camera tripod).
