Tricks and pranks aren't always funny, and now a man is facing a possible life sentence for his latest one aimed at his girlfriend. CNN reported on Sept. 10, 2013, that 26-year-old Remee Lee was tricked by her boyfriend into taking an abortion pill that caused her to miscarry.
Lee had been ecstatic when she learned she was pregnant, but 28-year-old John Andrew Welden was not so thrilled about it. That was the very reason that he tricked her into taking the abortion pill. Welden is no facing a possible life sentence, but will get at least 13 years in prison.
"Every day is a nightmare for me ever since this began," Lee told Chris Cuomo on CNN's 'New Day' Tuesday. "Even hearing the guilty (plea) yesterday, it's hard to believe it, it's hard to read it and know that this actually happened to me."
Welden accepted a plea deal on Monday that could end up sending him to prison for 13 years. He was indicted under the federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act which is rarely used. It is actually a murder charge that comes with a life sentence.
Welden's attorney Todd Foster said that he wasn't going to take the risk of going to trial with his client.
"The possibility of a mandatory life sentence, no discretion to the judge, obviously is a big factor," Foster said. "Obviously it's tragic all around from every angle, and I think that's recognized."
His sentencing will be held on Dec. 5, 2013.
A sonogram showed that Lee was six weeks pregnant and her boyfriend was not happy at all, but she was insistent on having the baby. A few days later, Welden said that Lee's blood tests showed she had an infection and she needed to take amoxicillin.
Instead of bringing her the proper medicine, Welden brought Lee a drug called Cyotec, that causes contractions. She was soon rushed to the hospital with abdominal pain and bleeding and ended up losing the baby.
