Halloween costumes are the ultimate arts and crafts. Store bought kids and adult costumes can be expensive, too grown up, too childish, or too silly. They can have those uncomfortable plastic masks to wear over your face or they are just too boring. Making your own costumes for you and your family is exciting and fun. Plus, no one will have one like yours on Halloween night!
Take a theme or an idea for a costume and envision it, then create your vision. Like Mr. Miagi said, the picture in your head is always right. Here are some last minute costume ideas that do not cost a lot of money, but make a big impact.
Grapes: Take a solid green or purple sweatsuit. Blow up dozens of purple balloons and safety pin them to the suit. Dont forget to make a hat out of green felt!
Apple: Get an over sized red sweathirt and add padding all around it. Add some green tights, make a white “apple core” hat and you'll have an apple.
Salt and Pepper: Make silver colored bowl hats and add holes to the top. A white sweatshirt with an “S” on it can be salt. Splatter gray or black paint on another white or gray sweatshirt with a “P” on it to be pepper.
For girls costumes, bumblebees, ladybugs, fairies and princesses can be easily created by making a tutu out of elastic and tulle fabric. Pair it with a solid color bodysuit, wings, leggings and some cute details and props.
Super heroes for boys costumes can be re-created with just a little detailed work on the hero's emblem. Find a comic book character or super hero costume image on the internet to copy or trace. Create the emblem with felt or fabric using the image as your template. Superman, Spiderman or Batman emblems can be ironed or glued to a t-shirt or other cotton shirt. Wonder Woman's emblem with the “WW” can be made out of gold fabric glued onto a red bustier.
Animal costumes: Cat, dog, other animal ears or insect antennae can be made out of pipe cleaners, headbands, felt and fabric glue. Fill a solid colored sock with polyester stuffing and attach with a safety pin to create a tail. Paint a nose and whiskers on your face. Add a collar, use gloves for paws, use some props, like a leash, to complete your look and a little creativity can turn a plain costume into a show stopper.
Nursery rhyme, TV and movie characters can be made with the right clothing and some creative props. Little Miss Muffet needs a fancy dress, a spider and a bowl. Little Red Riding Hood needs a red coat, or a red hoodie and a basket. Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz needs a basket, stuffed dog and ruby slippers.
Find some old cheerleader outfits, a red track suit, make a bull horn and blond wig to be Sue Sylvester and the kids from Glee. Get some friends together and turn yourselves into the Scooby-Doo gang or the gang from Jersey Shore with your own jersey nick names. Halloween is not just about being scared or getting candy, its about family, playing pretend and having fun. Craft together and make this year a memory that you can keep forever.
