Tribute to Al Kooper at Dakota Jazz Club

dakotacooks.com

Occasionally, talent comes along and touches more lives than a Kevin Bacon game.  Al Kooper is one such person.

The musician/songwriter/record producer celebrates 50 years of growing talent and creating careers on Sunday, May 2, at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis.

At age 16, he wrote the number one song, "This Diamond Ring" for Gary Lewis and the Playboys. By age 21, he was living in Greenwich Village and playing the Hammond Organ on Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone."

From songwriting to record producing, Kooper's musical lifestyle introduced him to many legends in the making, such as The Zombies, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cream, George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, and BB King.

Besides Bob Dylan, Al Kooper has another local connection.  In 1997, he worked on The Honeydogs' album, "Seen a Ghost."

On Sunday, Adam Levy of The Honeydogs pays tribute to this musical great.  He'll be joined by Al Kooper himself, which makes this tribute extra special.

Al Kooper told the Star Tribune that he's "never done something like this" and he is looking forward to the show.

Also on the bill is a list of great local talent, including John Munson (Semisonic), Martin Devaney, and Paul Metsa.

Music starts at 7 pm.  Tickets range from $36 to $45.  The Dakota Jazz Club is located at 1010 Nicolett Mall, Minneapolis.
