Tribe Men Edge Monarchs in Close Win

The William & Mary men’s tennis team came to Norfolk and edged Old Dominion on a beautiful Saturday afternoon 4-3.

The Monarchs earned the doubles point as number two court, Zvonimir Podvinski and Koen Wiggemans won 8-7 (4) after the two teams split on courts one and three.

One seed Carlos Lopez Villa grinded out a 6-3, 6-3 and Jonas Kuwert followed shortly with a straight sets win on court 4, giving the Monarchs a 3-0 lead. The Tribe closed with wins on courts 5 and 6 leaving the team match hinging on the last two singles courts 2 and 3.

ODU senior Dante Terenzio lost the number two court to William & Mary freshman Addison Appleby and the team match was deadlocked at 3 apiece.

About 50 spectators stayed to watch a closely contested court 3 finally ending in victory for Tribe junior Will Juggins as he outlasted a game Podvinski 6-4 in the third set.

Earlier, the Monarchs honored Terenzio on “Senior Day” only to be spoiled by the close loss. The Monarchs head to Tulsa to the Conference USA tourney with a 12-9 record. William & Mary will host the Colonial Athletic Association conference tournament on April 18-20 with lots of momentum and a 16-8 record.
