Political pundits are seizing on low approval ratings reported in the latest Tribune/WGN poll as a sign of Mayor Daley's political demise, but there is another poll finding worth noting.

The poll shows 56% of Chicago voters support the mayor's efforts to ban handguns, 34% disapprove and 9% have no opinion.

The ban was blown apart by a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision but  the mayor and City Council quickly pieced together and passed a new ordinance they bill as the toughest handgun law in the country.

This is the first poll in a while that asked people what they think on the gun control issue in Chicago.

It is reported at a time of increased awareness of gun violence as local media outlets keep daily tally on the people shot and killed every day in Chicago. This morning a Chicago police officer was shot and killed on the South Side. He is the third officer shot and killed this summer. See: Chicago police officer killed just weeks before retirement

Other poll highlights show 37% of voters approve of the mayor's overall performance and three-quarters approve of his push to allow more Walmart stores in Chicago.

The poll was conducted between July 8-14 and involved 500 registered voters. The poll has a margin of error of 4.4 percentage points, according to the Trib.

They didn't ask me! His gun ban stance is near-obscene. No wonder his approval rating has dropped to 35% (according to what I read on here yesterday). Daley needs to quit speaking for the common people because he's never known what it is like to be one of us.

I wasn't asked either, keep in mind, most City Employees will just agree so they don't lose their jobs.

LOL, I was about to say the say thing. I am a Chicago resident and everyone I have talked to said they disagreed with Daley. Where do they crunch these numbers? It only loses credibility in the long run.
