Tomorrow at 7:30 am, professional triathletes Leanda Cave and Andy Potts will dive into the San Francisco Bay and attempt to win their fourth Escape from Alcatraz title. They will have plenty of competition to push them on to the finish line. Last year, Cave won the female pro race by 14 seconds over Jenna Shoemaker. This year, Cave will have yet another rival.
"Unfortunately we have Sara McLarty in the race this year and she's going to be faster than anyone. She's a very talented swimmer, she was a distance swimmer before competing in triathlon. She can kick my ass. For this race in particular it's going to be a bit different than it's been in the past where I've come out in the lead with a few other girls. There will be a clear leader which will be Sara and then myself and possibly two or three others like Nicky Samuels and Becky Lavelle. Sara is an exceptionally strong cyclist as well, her weakest part of the race will be the run. The run is also very long like the swim is very long. So it's going to be a very close race on Sunday and I think Sara will be the one we will be chasing down from the start."
Potts will also have his hands full with two-time Ironman World Champion Craig Alexander. However everyone racing will also have to deal with the weather. Today's San Francisco rainfall broke the 1934 record, the same year that Al Capone began serving time at "The Rock."
According to Potts, "We've been blessed with a lot of awesome weather in recent years but we might get a little bit of a turn for the worse with the weather. It will cloud things over a little bit more so it will be hard to see. You just have to trust that corridor of kayakers and jet skiers. There's a lot of trust going on."
Trust us to bring you interviews with both Leanda Cave and Andy Potts. Stay tuned...
