RALEIGH, N.C. - The sports scene in the Triangle heats up in January as the Carolina Hurricanes (15-16-9) stay close to an NHL playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division while in NCAA women's basketball all three teams - Duke Blue Devils (12-1), UNC Tar Heels (11-2), and NC State Wolfpack (13-1) - have already reached the double-digit win mark heading into Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play.
The Hurricanes are on the road to face the Washington Capitals on Thursday after winning a dramatic New Year's Eve game, 5-4 in overtime, against the Montreal Canadiens.
The 3rd-ranked Blue Devils host Old Dominion on Thursday at Cameron Indoor Stadium (6:30 p.m.) before heading on the road to face Georgia Tech in their ACC opener on Sunday.
The Wolfpack hosts the No. 20 Syracuse Orange at Reynolds Coliseum on Sunday at 2 p.m. while the Tar Heels tip off an hour later at 3 p.m. against the eighth-ranked Maryland Terrapins at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill.
Even with colder temperatures predicted to arrive soon, there will be an abundance of movement on the ice and on the hardwood to keep fans warm while they take in some of the best pro and college sports action and entertainment the Triangle area has to offer.
