Trial for Hutaree Christian militia begins in Detroit court

Seven members of a Michigan group accused of planning to overthrow the government, and other serious charges, were in Federal Court Tuesday in Detroit.

The group, known as the Hutaree, is considered Christian militia by the local community and authorities.  In 2010 CAIR-MI called on the FBI to release more information that suggested threats to the American Muslim population by the group.

Hutaree is thought to be active in several midwest states, with rallies and scheduled speeches centered around the new world order theme taking place in certain cities.

Thus far the prosecution contends that the Hutaree was training to kill a police officer and then attack the other officers attending the funeral of that officer, while the defense is saying that the group "engaged in stupid, hateful speech" but nothing criminal.

Jury selection is already underway and the final jury panel is expected to be seated Monday for a trial expected to last 6 to 8 weeks.

According to a report, eight members of the Hutaree have been free on bond pending trail.  Those currently charged include six white men and one white woman from southeast Michigan counties.

If the court finds the group members guilty, would they be considered terrorists?  Weigh in below.
