At the Mid-America Trucking Show, Wal-Mart showed it's futuristic new tractor-trailer design called the WAVE, Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experienceand it's about time some innovation in design came to the beasts of the highway.
The tractor-trailer, has advanced turbine powertrain, electrified auxiliary components, leading edge aerodynamics, and more.
"When Wal-Mart began our sustainability journey, I never thought it would lead us to trucks like this,"
said Doug McMillon, president and CEO at Wal-Mart.
The new truck is said to be 20 percent more aerodynamic than the company's current trucks.
"Wal-Mart is continually looking for innovative ways to increase our efficiencies and reduce our fleet's emissions,"
said Tracy Rosser, senior vice president of transportation at Wal-Mart.
The vehicle’s trailer, which was displayed at Great Dane’s booth, is the first to use carbon fiber panels for the roof and sidewalls, saving nearly 4,000 pounds compared with traditional steel or aluminum trailers.
“This road-ready prototype trailer is a bold step in transportation technologies. We look forward to further collaboration with Wal-Mart to create more fuel-efficient vehicles of this type in the future.”
said Adam Hill, vice president of product and sales engineering at Great Dane..
