This season’s hair accessories require only a small investment but deliver a huge style return. Adorned with rhinestones, pearls, feathers and more, spring’s headbands and bobby pins are the perfect way to update and enhance your look for day and night.

With so many designers creating these statement pieces, you need not look like Blair Waldorf to pull off this look. When choosing pieces, use the same fashion rules of thumb you do for any other piece:

  • Look for accessories that complement your hair color and style.
  • Accessorize according to your age. Younger women can pull off big flowers, while older women should choose simpler pieces. A piece that isn’t age-appropriate calls attention to your age, rather than the fabulous accessory.
  • Opt for more subdued hair accessories, such as those featuring pearls or mixed metals, for the workplace. For night or special occasions, bring out the sequins, feathers, big flowers and rhinestones.
  • Remember to balance. If you’re wearing a lot of patterns or bright colors, choose a simple accessory. Similarly, if you’re sporting a white tank and jeans, try a bolder headpiece.
