Last fall season welcomed a couple of new trends into our wardrobes and though not all of them may make it to the next one, there is one particular trend that gathered a lot of power, becoming one of the must-haves of the 2012 spring/summer season: the peplum silhouette.
The peplum shape was very popular during the 80’s and now it’s back in all sorts of styles, volumes and fabrics. Back in that decade, peplum was extremely voluminous, making it almost impossible for all girls to wear since it was not flattering to all body types; but now it’s more slimming, it accentuates the waist and disguises the hip area.
Peplums come in jackets, coats, blouses, skirts and dresses; aside from being perfect as casual or formal wear, it all depends on the garment you pick for each event.
Don’t be afraid to approach this new silhouette, just try it on and see for yourselves, the silhouette will be flattering as long as your waist is accentuated. Do some fashion research and look at the photos of the spring/summer 2012 fashion shows: Versace peplums were long and flat; Badgley Mischka, Alexander McQueen, Rodarte and Jason Wu made them puffier; while Vera Wang added them as a detail to long formal dresses.
It’s a new year so let’s start it trying out a new trend; the peplum silhouette will be great to fulfill that purpose.
HOW TO WEAR
1. If you are adding volume below the waist, wear slimmer and tight clothes in the upper area; show off that tiny waist.
2. If you choose a peplum jacket or coat, wear a tight pencil skirt or skinny pants as bottoms; never add more volume by pairing a peplum top with a wide leg trouser or puffy skirt.
3. Belt it! Make your waist even smaller when you wrap a cinch or belt around it; whether it goes on top of the peplum blazer or skirt, it will look fabulous day or night.
