Gentlemen, spring will be here in the blink of an eye and before you know it, the time to update your wardrobe will be here. Don’t get caught out there, not knowing what to wear. I’m here to introduce you to the spring trends for 2013 men’s fashion!
For fall and winter, we saw a lot of dark colors and obvious heavyweight textures, like tweed and herringbone. Spring is definitely lighter, more subtle in texture and tone with a lot of natural hues like ivory and light greys. Also, pastels bring a welcome wash of color to the spring wardrobe palette along with patterns like bold stripes, checks and windowpanes. Some of my favorite shades for the gents this upcoming fashion season are light baby blues and corals, (yes, you can pull off coral fellas) mixed with sandy browns, ivory and of course, basic black.
A great way to pair your colors without being overly dramatic is to take a great pop of color, like this Izod coral striped button down sold at Macy’s (stores and online) and pair it with a dark pair of denim or some fitted dark cargos. Now you’re sporting color with style and class. This shirt is also available in a striking pastel blue and light seafoam green, which are amazing colors for the upcoming spring season and work with just about every skin tone.
You can’t go wrong in classic grey and I love pairing tone on tone for a slim and dashing look. Kenneth Cole nails it with this slightly heathered grey button down, fit just right and paired with some lighter grey slacks. From the office to happy hour and beyond, you’ll definitely be turning heads.
If you’re not afraid to think outside of the box, colored jeans are definitely the rave in men’s fashion right now. While I may not be a big fan of some of the lighter shades, like yellow and mint green on my guys, they are certainly trending for the season and when done right, they can definitely work. If you want to try the lighter, brighter jeans, then you want to go low key with the shoes and the top. A bright jean will marry well with more muted and neutral tones like sandy brown, dark grey, black and chestnut brown. I’m definitely digging the darker crimsons, blues and greys though, like these grey slim fit jeans available right in Manhattan Mall’s Express store as well as online, or these burgundy jeans from Royal Premium Denim, available at Macy’s. I can appreciate the slim, not too skinny look, which adds long, lean lines and can actually make you appear to be taller. Don’t be afraid to try the fitted look!
I’m also digging some pieces of the limited edition throwback styling collection inspired by the hit TV show, Madmen, and executed by Banana Republic. Right on queue with the colors, patterns and fits of the season, you’ve got chambrays, lightweight cottons and linen blends and bold stripes to play around with. Mix, match and have fun with your style, gentlemen.
Oxfords, boat shoes and penny loafers are the shoes to have this season and whether it be in a solid light blue leather, like these by Tommy Hilfiger at Macy’s for a nice burst of color, or these two toned red and brown oxfords by Steve Madden that will make any jeans or slacks stand out, what’s on your feet will definitely be an important part of making your outfit a hit.
Lastly, you want to invest in a nice, soft leather (or faux leather) jacket in camel, taupe, grey, crimson or any light or mid shade that plays off of other colors. Stay away from black for this. This jacket is going to be an essential piece for spring that will be a staple for your wardrobe and black is so, well…boring! I’m feeling this red faux leather bomber jacket, available at Burlington Coat Factory.
So, fellas, embrace the warm coming weather and let’s do some spring cleaning as we segue from fall to spring fashion. Remember; don’t be afraid of color or bold patterns. Don’t be afraid to try something new that falls outside of your comfort zone. You’ll be surprised just how great you can look and comfortable you can feel in some new digs for the season. Happy spring fashion!
