The word is out - Treefort Music Fest 2013 is in the offing - March 21-24, to be exact. Friday, January 18th, the festivities officially get underway with the Treefort 2013 Launch Party. Last year’s launch party was a sold-out affair that featured Youth Lagoon (among the artists in this year’s Treefort lineup); this year, the Launch Party features a trio of electronic artists: Denver-based Flashlights, as well Boise’s own Shades and Lamont Kohner. The show will be taking place in the recently remodeled and newly-christened Sapphire Room at the Riverside Hotel. To further enliven the proceedings, Vinyl Preservation Society will be spinning records in the lobby from 8 to midnight. There will be a pop-up Treefort box office at the show, so you can pick up tickets at the venue. Additionally, two attendees who have already purchased 4-Day passes will walk away with VIP upgrades that will be given away at the Launch Party.
Flashlights earned notoriety in 2011 with their debut Hidden Behind Trees EP. and followed up with another EP, So Close to Midnight, in 2012. They have toured with New Order and Youth Lagoon, and done festival duty at CMJ and SXSW. Their latest EP sees an evolution toward a more dance-oriented sound. Flashlights have also been readying new material for a full-length 2013 release; perhaps some of this material may be heard at the launch party...?
Shades, a Boise four-piece, released their debut full-length, Clear Motions, in early 2012, and captivated listeners with their entry into the chillwave/electro scene. Treefort denizens were treated to a memorable set by Shades at last year’s Treefort “Thank You” party. The band recently took to their Facebook page to urge fans to keep their ears peeled for some new material, which would seem to indicate that some of said new material will be on display during their Sapphire Room set.
Ambient/dub techno/ambient dub fans would do well to sit up and take notice of Lamont Kohner. Kohner’s November, 2012 release, Williamette Dubs, is replete with five orginal tracks and five remixes that call to mind some of Bill Laswell’s classic 90’s dub work, ranging from the ambient to the danceable. The Launch Party will be the debut live performance of the Willamette Dubs project.
Tickets for the event are only $10.00. Doors at 8pm.
