One of the big differences between western biomedical medicine and traditional medicines like Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the approach to healing. Western biomedical medicine focuses on fixing what can be fixed and then allow healing to progress. In Traditional medicines there is much more of a focus on how to help the body to heal. The result is that acupuncturists and herbalists look at pain as an indicator of how the healing process is progressing rather than a negative indication that needs to be controlled or eliminated.

This is especially true with “old injuries”. Many people have pain from old injuries that still bother them, often years after the original trauma. Traditional Chinese Medicine has various ways of evaluating and treating these types of conditions. The focus in TCM is on helping the body complete the healing process. The nature of the pain and how it manifests provide indications of how traditional techniques can be properly utilized to help the healing process.

In TCM old injuries are often referred to as Bi (pronounced “bee”) syndromes. They are classified by the environmental factors that they most represent. The most recognizable example is the situation where a person notices more pain with the changes in weather. Patients who have these types of old injury pain can find relief in the treatments provided by a practitioner of Chinese Medicine.
