The autumn weather is upon us, the kids are back in school, and summer vacation is definitely over.
If your family took a trip to the beach this summer, chances are you collected a few shells and brought some home to hold onto those precious summer moments. But where are those shells now? Turning into sand in the garage? Still at the bottom of your beach bag? Maybe you haven’t even thought about them since your trip.
Instead of letting them fade away with the summer memories, why not turn them into a piece of home décor you can treasure all year round? Here are some simple, do-it-yourself ideas for what to do with those precious summer treasures.
1. Make some Christmas ornaments
Why not create a memento that will remind you of your summer during the cold winter months? It can be as simple as filling a glass ball with smaller shells or attaching ribbon hangers to your larger finds.
2. Use them as a vase or bowl filler
Everyone is guilty of looking over those expensive vase fillers in stores but finding themselves shocked at the price tag. So why not make your own? Here is a simple item that is unique, and will constantly remind you of your summer adventures. Simply grab your favorite vase or bowl and fill it less than three quarters full.
3. Create a wreath.
There are several different styles of wreaths you can create. If you’re crafty, why not try covering an entire wreath with shells. This takes lots of time a patience and it’s almost like creating your own puzzle, but its well worth the effort. If you’re craft-impaired or in a rush, use shells as an accent piece on a current wreath. Vine wreaths are awesome since they a beautiful on their own, and take minimal décor to maintain their beauty. Finish off your wreath with a simple rope hanger to complete the nautical feel.
4. Cover a frame.
If you’re decorating on a budget, why not turn a couple dollar store frames into masterpieces to hold your favorite summer vacation photos? Just like making a wreath, there are several different styles you can create. Accent the corners or create a border, for a minimal effect. Or create a dramatic look by covering the entire surface. Like the wreath, this will take patience and skill as you puzzle each shell together.
Quick tip: When working with shells, hot glue will be your best friend and worst enemy. It’s very effective at holding the shells in place, but the shell material is quick to heat up too. Be careful, shells will be hot!
Good luck creating all your summer vacation mementos to enjoy year round in your home!
