Treasure mapping: The GPS of setting goals and attracting what we desire

The final two steps of the goal-setting process as identified by Jack Boland, deceased senior minister at the Church of Today (now Renaissance Unity) in Warren, Michigan, in “…And That’s the Way it Really Is!” are keeping your goals in sight every day and visualizing the celebration of the completion of each goal.

The technique of “treasure mapping” accomplishes both these steps in a creative manner. According to Mary Katherine MacDougall in “What Treasure Mapping Can Do for You,” this technique “has been called ‘pictured prayer.’ Just as a road map indicates the way to a planned destination, a treasure map helps us get what we desire…. Physically, it is a piece of paper on which we have placed pictures of what we want with statements of faith.”

A more familiar name for a treasure map is “collage.” The final product can be big and elaborate or small and concise. It does, however, need to be specific and focused. A treasure map can be focused on only one desire or can be broken into sections focused on several individual desires.

It is a fun and creative process involving magazines, scissors, glue, and poster board or construction paper. It can be created spontaneously (as in the brief video accompanying this article) or more deliberately with greater forethought. Ultimately, it is an effective and powerful way to focus your mind and your heart on what you seek and are working toward.
