Travis Pastrana along with Red Bull and Subaru have set out to accomplish the unthinkable. A world record jump from a pier in Long Beach, CA onto a barge sitting 250 feet off shore is how Pastrana does things. The previous rally car jump record was held by Ken Block, at 171 feet on land. Jumping over the water to 250 feet should give some cushion if the stunt fails. At 250 feet the speed and trajectory would be fatal if jumped on land should the stunt fail. By jumping over water, it increases the showmanship while adding a small level of safety. But let's not forget bay sharks and the possibility of drowning; it's still a very dangerous stunt.
Travis Pastrana world record jump announcement
As you can see above, the stunt is going to be completed to continue the legendary theme of stuntmen lore. Pushing life to the limit in many ways, Travis Pastrana is quickly becoming the "Evil Knievil" of modern times. Will the jump go as planned, or will things go ary? There are many variables taking place during the jump that could throw things off. The first and most important would be cross winds. Any large water body mass contains winds, and these winds change and shift at any moment. Should the winds change direction mid jump, he could very likely land off target. Even during practice stages seen below, jumping a car can turn ugly in a split second if only one minor variable is off. The best of luck to Travis Pastrana as he attempts the unthinkable, 250 foot jump over the water onto a barge in a Subaru. If anyone can do it, he can!
Update: Happy New Year 2010! Travis did it! He set the new world record for the longest rally car jump at 269 feet. Jumping from the pier to the barge, he actually over shot the jump and wrecked the car. Hitting the dew covered landing ramp, there was no stopping. "It was like driving on ice" says Pastrana, shortly after doing a back flip into the bay from the top of the barge. Great job Travis, you stunned the world again! Now what will Ken Block's answer be to this jump? Will we see a 300 foot attempt? I think so!
