Traverse City: National Cherry Festival

It’s that time of the year again, when tourist from all over the world flock to Traverse City, Michigan in search of cherries and grapes. The National Cherry Festival, or the Traverse City Cherry Festival as it is commonly known, is back and it promises to be a fun event this year too. The annual festival, which is held in the largest city of Northern Michigan sees an average crowd of more than 500,000 people every year.

The festival will host more than 150 events to woo attendees travelling to see the cherry harvest for the 88th year running. If rumors are to be believed, the organizers have added host of new events this year. So what’s special this time around? Dare devils interested in stunt acts will be in for a treat as the U.S. Navy Blue’s Angels take to the sky over the West Grand Traverse Bay along with the first-ever Festival flight performance of an F-22. The event showcases the US Navy perform loads of dare devil operations in the sky and on water. Make sure you bring your family and friends, as the most exciting flight demonstration is free for all to thrill from Friday 4th of July to the 6th of July.

Good news for power runners, 2014 Meijer Festival of Races will have two new events for people interested in running. The runners will be overjoyed to see the return of the 10K event and also for the first time the introduction of a Half Marathon. So for all fitness and health enthusiasts, Saturday, July 12, 2014 promises to be action packed all the way to the finish line. People in need for speed, what are you waiting for? Time to unleash the race horses in you!

The festival throws open three events that promises to entertain your taste buds as well. It not only brings back the all-time favourite Cherries D’vine but also adds Blues, Brews, and BBQ and the Great American Picnic to charm the foodie in you. So get ready to enjoy a feast in the offering for three tasteful days starting from 4th to 6th of July. Foodies can choose from any one of the events or can be a part of all three events. Every event carries its own ticket prices; it would be wiser to choose an event based on your budget and taste.

The festival also promises entertainment for music diehards with a great line up in store for your music appetite. There are various gigs planned across the 8 day event, which sees some of the best acts in the business showcase their musical talents. The opening act is by the famous American rock band COLLECTIVE SOUL on the 5th of July followed by Here Come the Mummies on the 6th, Emmy award winning Bihlman Bros line up on the 7th of July. We also have Gin Blossoms playing on the 8th of July.

George Thorogood and The Destroyers have been added to this year’s line-up lining up on the 9th. UNDER THE SUN TOUR occupy the stage on the 10th of July. Bands like Sugar Ray, Smashmouth, Blues Travelers, and Uncle Kracker bring back memories from the 90’s through this tour.

Ryan Whyte Maloney who recently showcased his talent on NBC, the Voice, who also is a home grown star would be lining up before Country Music’s New Artist of the Year, Justine More, on the 11th of July. The festival comes to end after Tommy James and The Shondells take to the stage on the 12th of July. The ticket for the acts can be bought online from the festival website. Sports Camp
Young and old Ice hockey fans are not left far behind as Detroit based ice hockey team Detroit Red Wings will be holding their annual development camp at 5$ per day from 4-8 of July. A publicized practice session will provide an insight into the preparations of the team before the rosters are released in time for the 2014 draft season. These camps have been fruitful in past as 13 players who have been drafted from the last three development camps have made their NHL debuts in the last two years with the Red Wings.
