Travel writer's quick San Diego dining escapes

A few dining suggestions on how to best fortify yourself during a trek to San Diego's Mission Bay area  come to you courtesy of travel writer Colleen Adair Fleidner and her latest book, Quick Escapes from Orange County ($14.95, GPP Travel, 1-800-243-0495, www.globepequot.com).

Fleidner leads the trip to Mission Bay with Sea World, but has a few suggestions for  breakfast while en route and dinner afterward.

These include two cool places off the beaten track.

First, in Solana Beach, the recommendation is Beach Grass Cafe, 159 S. Highway 101, www. beachgrasscafe.com.  The pancakes are supposedly top-notch and there are other European style items such as vegetable ratatouille omelet for the more exotically inclined.

Closer to the bay, there's the Olive Cafe, 805 Santa Clara point, www.olivecafe.biz.  Another local's favorite, the cafe features all manner of berry-strewn pancakes, along with specialty omelets.

Once fortified, Fleider's tip is to set aside at least six hours for Sea World.

Or, perhaps even more.

The park features Spring into Night on Saturdays April 2-23.  Nighttime shows feature sea lion and otters,   killer whales and fireworks until 9 p.m. For more information, call (800) 25-SHAMU or visit www.seaworld.com.

Having worked up an appetite from a day of communing with our aquatic brethren, her choice for dining is the Atoll Restaurant at the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa, 3999 Mission Boulevard, (800) 422-8386. Tenderloin and prime rib tempt beef lovers, while sea food offerings are available for those in search of lighter fare.
