Are you local to the Los Angeles area looking for kid-friendly activities or simply visiting the city with your family in tow? Then, here’s a great idea for a day out with your little ones: Travel Town in Griffith Park.
The Griffith Park Train Rides website offers detailed information about the exact location and visiting hours for both the Griffith Park & Southern Railroad (near Los Feliz Blvd and Riverside Drive) and the Travel Town Railroad. The GPS Railroad is about a mile long, going through a tunnel, the Western Old Town and more. The Travel Town Railroad is about 3/8ths of a mile, built in the perimeter around the Travel Town Museum and going around the outdoor exhibit of the museum.
With parking and admission free of charge, all you have to do is hop on these trains at $2.75 per person, per ride (GPS RR offers one loop, Travel Town RR offers two loops). According to the website, they have 5 locomotives and 21 passenger coaches available for operation year round in the parks, that are 1/4th and 1/3rd scale models of the actual locomotives and passenger cars they had when they started operations in 1948.
Both, the Railroads and the Museum (located at 5200 Zoo Drive, Los Angeles) open daily (except for Christmas Day) at 10:00a.m. and, close between 3:30p.m. and 6:00p.m. depending on season and day of the week.
According to museum’s foundation website, the foundation’s mission is “to educate the public about railroad history as it pertains to the development of the Southwest Region of the United States, particularly the Los Angeles area… supporting the restoration, operation, and interpretation of the historic railroad equipment at the City-operated Travel Town Museum…” Which is yet another good reason to come visit with your whole family. Come learn, have fun and support education and preservation!
