Traveling to Europe in the winter can be harsh. Especially now. While St. Louis has been enjoying lush temperatures around the 50 degree mark, Europe has been hit with frigid temperatures and icy snow. But there are ways to enjoy the snow. And best ways are found in the Alps.
Zermatt, Switzerland: Due to the high altitude, there is always a guarantee of snow here. Great for skiing, snow shoeing or other snow-capped activities. One of the most commonly known mountains of the Alps, the Matterhorn, is located at Zermatt. And the only way to roll into town is by a horse-drawn carriage because cars aren’t allowed.
Avoriaz, France: This is a hot spot for the younger crowd. Mainly because of the vibrant night life. And by day, the village is located right in the mountains amongst the ski slopes for optimum snow immersion.
Stubai Glacier, Austria: For those of the more athletic type, Innsbruck might just be the place to go. Known for attracting renowned athletes from around the world, this haven offers snow adventures of various kinds. Featured at this resort are ice climbing and a unique zip line experience above the resort.
Campitello, Italy: Sometimes a snow holiday is more than just skiing, snowboarding and conquering the mountain. Winter walks, tobogganing, mountaineering, ice skating and paragliding are additional activities offered at this location. This is a great destination for families because there are adventures for just about everyone.
And if the Alps are out of reach, hold out for the snow to hit St. Louis and make a day trip to a local destination, Hidden Valley. Learn to ski or snowboard down one of eighteen slopes, or if that’s not your style, grab an inner tube and cruise down the Polar Plunge!
