Lexington, Kentucky, is known as the horse capital of the world. This title is well deserved, since more champion thoroughbred horses have been born and bred in Lexington than anywhere else on the planet. This unique legacy is alive and on display here at the Kentucky Horse Park, in the midst of Kentucky’s famed Bluegrass Region.
The broadly expansive and scenic horse farm is the abode of approximately fifty assorted horse breeds. Spanning over twelve hundred acres, it boasts a wide assortment of exhibits and tours focusing on the history of horses and horse racing. It is complete with its own farrier shop, where modern blacksmiths exhibit their ancient craft.
The famous Kentucky Horse Park is an actual working horse farm and interactive, educational equine theme park located off Kentucky state highway 1973 and interstate 75. Dedicated to "man's relationship with the horse,” the Kentucky Horse Park’s is a showcase for horses from across the globe and is a retirement home for some of the world's most notable competition horses.
Visitors are greeted at the park entrance by the Man o’ War Memorial, the bronze statue dedicated to one of the finest and most famous racehorses to ever run a racetrack. At the Visitor Information Center you can find a wealth of materials detailing the park’s many attractions and schedules that outline various special events that are held at the park throughout the year.
At the International Museum of the Horse, visitors are able to learn about the history of the horse and its coexistence with man throughout the ages. The museum has a huge assortment of unique and interesting displays that include antique horse-drawn carriages and racing vehicles along with splendid horse art and artifacts.
The gigantic Draft Horses are one of the most popular attractions. The Horse Drawn Tour area features Clydesdales, English Shires, Norwegian Fjords, Belgians, Suffolks and other massive breeds. These horses earn their keep by pulling the horse drawn trolleys that visitors can ride to tour the rolling countryside in the park.
This is a place where visitors can get up close and personal with the four legged residents. There are great photo opportunities where you can stand beside some of the world’s greatest champions. Of course, the park also offers horseback trail rides and children’s pony rides.
