Travel tip Tuesday: Applying for a passport in Vero Beach, Florida

A U.S. Passport will grant you access to traveling outside of the United States for vacation or business. It is important to understand how and where to apply for your U.S. Passport here in Vero Beach, Florida. This way you can avoid any mistakes, delays or denial of your passport application. The office of the Clerk of Circuit Court in Indian River County accepts passport applications and forwards all applications to the Department of State for processing.

Applications

Applications can be picked up at the Clerk of Courts office or you can download and print one from the Department of States website by clicking here.

Documentation

There are different forms of documentation you will need when submitting your passport application. Here are the different types of documentation you will need to bring with you.

Proof of Citizenship - certified birth certificate with raised seal and file date; prior passport (if you have one), original naturalization papers and Social Security Number.

Identification - one with both the signature and a photograph of the applicant

Passport Photo - 2x2 front, full face view of applicant with a light background

Fees

The cost to apply for your passport is determined by your age and if you are renewing it or applying for a new one. If you are 16 years of age or older the application cost is $110. For those 15 years of age and under, application costs are $80. Make checks or money order for the fees out to the U.S. Department of State.

You will also need to bring $25 in cash to pay for the execution fee (per application). A credit card will be accepted for the execution fee, however, a $2.50 fee Is added.

To apply in person

Visit the office of the Clerk of Circuit Court, which is located in Room 139 at the Indian River County Courthouse - 2000 16th Avenue in Vero Beach. Passport applications are also accepted at the North County Office in Sebastian - 11604 US Highway 1.

Renewals

Renewals can be mailed to the Department of State. To renew your passport you will need to complete form DS-82 which is available online or at the Clerk’s office. Include $110 fee (check or money order) made out to the U.S. Department of State, two identical 2x2 photographs and your expired passport.

It will take approximately four to six weeks to receive your passport. You can request for your passport to be expedited, however, you will be charged $60 for expedited processing and $19.95 for Express Mail service to the State Department and another $12.85 for Express Mail back to you.
