Travel Spotlight: Nashville

Nashville is a musical mecca not to mention a foodie’s heaven. A trip to the Grand Ole Opry and the plethora of BBQ joints will prove that. But there is more to offer than just blues and BBQ when it comes to this soulful city. The Southern hospitality can be felt nearly everywhere you walk and there is something for everyone within blocks of each other.

Broadway is where the buzz is. As visitors walk down what’s known as “The District,” they will be followed by sounds of live music and smells of BBQ streaming out of nearly every door. For no frills BBQ, Jack’s is the place to go. Its Broadway location has additional upstairs and patio seating for eaters to dig into a plate of brisket, ribs or pulled pork, plus sides like the comforting mac and cheese.

Further down Broadway, Honky Tonk Central sits on the corner and looms three stories high. Local acts cover all country music with added flair from the performers and a fun environment where locals and tourists alike are invited to raise their drinks in a traditional “holler and swaller.” Drink of choice here would be the Key Lime Pie drink made with whipped cream vodka and the snack of choice has to be the fried pickles.

Just a few blocks off the main drag are main attractions such as the Country Music Hall of Fame, Bridgestone Arena where the Nashville Predators play, and the Johnny Cash Museum. For a fulfilling breakfast, step into Kitchen Notes located inside the Omni Hotel for a full-range buffet that includes a homemade biscuit bar complete with jams, jellies, and gravy.

For other cool places worth a stop, head to Third Man Records owned by recording artist Jack White where they host live recordings of shows. Craft breweries like Blackstone and Black Abbey Brewing Co. abound in Nashville with Nashville Brew Bus setting up tours to breweries run by people who really know and love their beer. Gruhn Guitars is a place for musician lovers to go to revel in all the guitars, banjos and mandolins their hearts desire. Right down from this storefront is The Smiling Elephant, an excellent, out-of-the-way Thai food place.

Whether it's for a weekend getaway, a bachelorette party or a trip to awaken your musical and culinary senses, Nashville is a fantastic spot to add to your travel adventures.

Travel tip: Stay in a hotel close to the airport to be more cost effective, take Uber to the main areas and walk around the city.
