Travel necessities 101: How do I apply for a passport?

To apply for your passport you need to go to your local post office and apply for a passport. 

Documentation needed:

  • Complete the DS-11 form.
  • Birth certificate - You need evidence of birthdate and citizenship. 
    • Click here for secondary options for evidence of U.S. citizenship.
  • Valid identification - This counts as either a valid driver's license, your old, undamaged passport, government ID, military ID or naturalization certificate.
    • Click here for secondary options of valid identification.
  • Pay the new passport fee
  • Give 2 passport photos - There are strict specifications for the size of passport photos.
    • Must be identical
    • 2x2 inches
    • Taken within the past 6 months
    • Full, frontal face photo
