The YikeBike is a new modification of the Penny-farthing
bicycle that is more compact and operates like a scooter.
Grant Ryan from New Zealand is the mastermind behind a new invention targeted for bike and scooter enthusiasts. His new gadget is a modification of a scooter and a penny cycle farthing machine. The contraption has a top speed of 13MPH and is operated by controls at your side, one brake and one accelerator. It is an ideal device for travelers as it only weights 22lbs and easily folds into a bag, making it easy to bring aboard your flight or store in your hotel room. You can carry it with you wherever you go. The design is based on the penny-farthing model with the main difference being that you sit much lower to ground level as opposed to the original models that had the huge back wheel that hoisted you up 5 feet in the air which could be fatal for those who fell. The “YikeBike” debuted at the Eurobike trade fair in Germany on September 2, 2009.
The YikeBike include anti skid brakes, built in indicators and lights and a Nano Lithium Phosphate battery which can be fully charged in 30 minutes. The YikeBike is currently available in the UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Denmark, Belgium and New Zealand. The price will be 3,500-3,900 Euros. There is no news as to when this product will be available in North America.
