You and your family may find yourself in the beginning of the doldrums of fall in the upcoming weeks. The weather is cooling off somewhat and kids have returned to school for the year. Taking this into account makes the desire to do something special and fun with a weekend even more pressing. A great opportunity for your family to consider in upcoming weekends is the Kansas City Renaissance Festival.
The Kansas City Renaissance Festival is held each year in Bonner Springs, KS. The Renaissance Festival traditionally begins on Labor Day weekend each season and opens each Saturday and Sunday until mid-October. The Festival was held for the very first time in 1977 to benefit the Kansas City Art Institute as part of a smaller festival. In 1999, Mid-America Festivals purchased the rights to promote and host the festival. Since then, the Renaissance Festival has continued to grow and now attracts approximately 180,000 visitors each season, is home to 165 booths and thirteen stages, and stretches over sixteen acres.
The most common thing that patrons associate with the Renaissance Festival is the medieval themes that are present throughout. Men and women will dress in time-period appropriate clothing of the 1500’s. This clothing portrays a wide-bodied look. Another item that people have long associated with the Renaissance Festival is the daily jousting expositions. Held at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm, the battling knights will compete to knock their opponent from their steed to the ground. Also, various acts can be found around the park on a daily basis performing either on one of the thirteen stages or walking around the streets of the festival and performing to patrons. Some of the acts to watch out for include jugglers, hypnotists, fire dancers, and magic shows. In addition, shows suitable for all ages are also available in The Children’s Realm. Children may also create their own crafts to take home with them in this area.
Each weekend of the Renaissance Festival celebrates a different theme. The themes include Pirate Ale Fest, the Pet Fest, Highland Games, Wonders of the World, Shamrocks and Shenanigans, Wine, Chocolate & Romance, Oktoberfest, and Harvest Huzzah. In addition to the themed events of each weekend, several special events are held throughout the season. Guests may also take advantage of the ability to celebrate their wedding at the Renaissance Festival or hold gatherings for large groups with discounted ticket prices as well.
The Renaissance Festival is located in Bonner Springs, KS at 633 N. 130th Street. From Kansas City, take Interstate 70 to Kansas Highway 7 and turn north. The Festival is open each weekend this season from August 31st to October 14th and also on Labor Day and Columbus Day.
