If you travel with any frequency, you have probably experienced the dreaded “lost” or “temporarily sent to a different state” luggage scenario. Airbus thinks it has a solution with its new “Bag2Go.”
Developed in partnership with German luggage maker Rimowa and mobile carrier T-Mobile, “Bag2Go” is essentially a smart bag which is implanted with a SIM card equipped with a sensor. It creates an electronic luggage tag, sort of like a barcode, which can be tracked by the bag’s owner with the help of a cell phone. If the bag goes astray the airline and the bag’s owner will be alerted by the bag.
If you’ve watched the video, you know that it seems pretty easy to use as a traveler. Just match the bag to your flight via cell phone and you are ready to go. Even I can do that, and I’m not particularly cutting edge when it comes to technology.
Now for the bad news: the bag does not appear to be ready for this December’s travel rush, and more bags are lost during December than in other period. Still, I’m hopeful. It sounds like a great idea that is long overdue. In the meantime, make sure to pack some underwear and essentials in your carry-on just in case you lose the luggage lottery this year.
