Trash worker crushed: Trash compactor's hydraulics system crushes, kills teen

A trash worker was crushed to death on Saturday morning about 10:30 a.m. while he was working in the back of a trash truck and the truck’s compactor came down and struck the teen trash worker in the chest. Louis Camarillo, an 18-year-old Bronx resident, was rushed to the hospital unconscious but was pronounced dead at Long Island College Hospital, reported The Wall Street Journal on March 16, 2013.

According to New York City police, the teen trash worker was working at the back of the trash truck at a paper recycling plant in the Dumbo Brooklyn neighborhood when the compactor came down, hit the trash worker's chest, and then crushed him. “He was hit in the chest, and then crushed by the truck’s hydraulics system.”

The teen trash worker was loading the truck with paper from the recycling plant and had only been working at the plant for three weeks. The teen trash worker’s relatives had been grateful that Louis had a job and that he was staying out of trouble.

The NYPD and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating Saturday morning’s accident. The garbage truck is privately owned and the scene is being investigated by police but no criminality in the death of the crushed trash worker is being suspected. It appears to have been “a terribly tragic accident”.
