What better way to deal with some forms of trash than to reuse it? Creating art out of trash is not a new concept, but perhaps, an under-utilized concept.
Camp Edmo (Edmo in the Park) is a non-profit summer camp for kids (pre-Kindergarten to entering 4th grade) that focuses on the outdoors, art, science, animation, and fun! This summer's program includes "Smart Art" week, where the kids will be utilizing trash scraps to create "fantastical sculptures", books, and other forms of art. To augment their supply of useable trash, the kids will be visiting SCRAP, the Scrounger's Center for Reusable Art Parts in San Francisco.
On a less positive note, as most of you who have young children in the public school system are fully aware, local schools have been severely impacted by government funding. Science, art, and physical education are generally the first programs to be cut from the curriculum. On the national scene, the U.S. Secretary of Education has reportedly called for children to supplement their learning by participating in summer enrichment camps, such as Camp Edmo.
Despite this call for supplemental learning, in difficult economic times, it may not be easy, or even remotely feasible, for many families to send their children to summer enrichment camps. Since 2004, Camp Edmo has granted over $135,000 in “camperships” to over 400 Bay Area children, through their Give Camp to Kids program. If your children are fortunate enough to attend a camp like Camp Edmo, consider sponsoring a low-income child through a tax-deductible donation sent to:

Kids…have fun, be creative, and re-use that trash!
