Yesterday the TWU convention at the Mirage in Las Vegas, delegates and union activists were called upon to help join the informational picket/rally against Allegiant Airlines outside the offices of the parent company Las Vegas-based Allegiant Travel Co. The flight attendants joined the Transport Workers Union over two years ago and have yet to receive a signed contract.
“It’s wonderful to have the support of so many of our TWU brothers and sisters from around the country,” said Debra Peterson Barber, an Allegiant flight attendant and Las Vegas-based flight attendant who serves as the lead negotiator for TWU Local 577. “Everyone who works in transportation knows that customer service is the key to success, and we all want to see Allegiant ready to deliver the best possible travel experience for our passengers.”
The union members wore shirts and carried signs to show their support for the cause. According to Skift.com, the newly elected president of the TWU, Harry Lombardo, chose one of his first actions to lead the protest Thursday at the Las Vegas headquarters of Allegiant Air, where TWU won the right to represent about 600 flight attendants but hasn’t secured a contract in more than two years of bargaining. Its members have picketed and handed out leaflets in a bid to shame the company, but those efforts haven’t produced results.
