Pattaya, Thailand:
Nissa Katerahong, won the title Miss Tiffany’s Universe transgender beauty queen Tuesday night.
The Miss Tiffany’s Universe transgender beauty pageant took place in Pattaya, Thailand this year. The contest has taken place every year since 2004 in Pattaya.
The contest is only broadcast on Thai national television.
Contestants posed for pictures Friday.
Despite the name, Universe, the contest doesn’t draw a lot of people from other counties. In fact, all the contestants this year were drawn from a pool of Thai residents.
Thailand uses the contest as a sort of tourist draw, as Pattaya is a resort city, and this pageant improves Thailand’s image as a tolerant country.
Some of the proceeds from the contest benefit local charities aimed at reducing poverty, and the rest go to The Royal Sponsored AIDS Foundation.
Winners of the pageant often go on to become actors or models.
The first winner, Treechada Malayaporn, who prefers to be called, Polly, helps present awards to the next generation. Miss Tiffany 2004 went on to be a successful actor and broadcaster.
The first prize for winning is about $1,000 USD and an automobile.
