A transgender 6-year-old was barred from using the girls' bathroom at school. The transgender 6-year-old was born male, but is treated like and addressed as a girl. According to a report from early Thursday (Feb. 28), the teachers and administrators at the school also refer to Coy Mathis using female pronouns. Mathis also wears girls' clothing, leading to no confusion as to what gender she is identifying with.
The disconnect came when Mathis wanted to use the girls' bathroom recently. During the first part of her first-grade year, Mathis was allowed to use the girls' bathroom at Eagleside Elementary School in Fountain, Colorado near Colorado Springs. In December, though, the school changed its policy and stated that Mathis would have to start using the boys' bathroom, a teacher’s lounge bathroom, or the nurse’s bathroom.
This change in policy has started a big debate about Mathis and whether the school is making the right decision here. The family of the transgender 6-year-old that has now been barred from the girls' restroom has filed a civil rights complaint. Their attorney stated that, "By forcing Coy to use a different bathroom than all the other girls, Coy’s school is targeting her for stigma, bullying and harassment."
Mathis has not been back to school since the policy change was made and now this will become the first legal challenge under Colorado’s Anti-Discrimination Act of a transgender child's ability to use the bathroom assigned to a particular gender.
