“Transformers” wins out on slow box office weekend

It’s hard to see a weekend in the month of July that only has two movies that hit double digits. This weekend we get to see that miracle. There are only two movies that hit double digits and only one of them was a new movie.

Transformers: Age of Extinction wins the box office title for the second straight week as it brings in an estimated $36.4 million. This is a large drop from it’s $100 million opening and the decline should keep happening from week to week as the movie is not getting the reviews that the first two Transformer movies did.

The new Melissa McCarthy comedy, Tammy, premiered in double digits as it was able to bring in an estimated $21.1 million over the weekend giving the movie an overall $32 million for it’s 5-day opening. While the movie didn’t premiere as high as her other movies, it could be that fans were expecting more of the comedy side of her, forgetting that she can also do drama.

The other new movie to premiere this week, Deliver us From Evil took in an estimated $9 million. This psycho thriller is based on true events but the fact that people don’t generally like scary movies in the summer could have taken away from it’s box office total.

22 Jump Street still remains in the top five as it brings in an estimated $9 million over the weekend while How to Train Your Dragon 2 brought in an estimated $8.7 million. The last new movie to premiere this week was Earth to Echo and it took in an estimated $8.2 million for it’s first weekend.

It looks like July might be an overall slow month at the box office with no big box busters coming out until August.
